It's another exciting day for Apple fans as a slew of new gadgets are
released, tempting those crisp notes out of our wallets. There's a new iPod
Touch featuring FaceTime video calling, Retina display and HD video
recording, as well as an updated iPod Suffle that allows users to add playlists. The new
iPod nano boasts a tiny touch screen that looks very cool indeed and
Apple TV has matured into a sleek, miniature device that has HDMI output and
allows owners to rent and buy films from iTunes or stream content direct
from their computers.
Apple have also updated their touch brand, using a simple but effective multi-coloured finger print design.

Blog: The Wilderness Downtown

The Wilderness Downtown is an interative website by Chris Milk, built entirely in HTML 5 and best viewed in Google Chrome. The site, a collaboration between the Milk, rock band Arcade Fire and Google, has a Donnie Darko feel to it and it's really inspiring to see a level of creativity usually reserved for the most artistic of music videos.

Blog: Rock Band 3 Track List

(This image, which was originally posted to Flickr, was uploaded to Commons using Flickr upload bot on 15:53, 4 July 2010 (UTC) by Guitarpop (talk).)
When you work at a top Nottingham website design company how do you unwind at the end of the day. By sitting in front of another screen and pretending you're a rock star of course. Here at Gooii we're massive fans of the Rock Band series and are looking forward to Rock Band 3, which sees the introduction of real instruments. As a guitarist this has to be my most anticipated feature; I find that Rock Band on Expert level confuses the hell out of me as I can't help thinking like a guitar player, not someone pressing buttons on a plastic instrument. Price permitting and if it works with the previous Rock Band tracks I'm in.
One of the best features of the Rock Band series has to be the playlists and IGN have scooped the full line-up of tracks. There's some absolute classics including Queen, Hendrix, The Who and Whitesnake, though I'm not sure how Amy Winehouse snuck in there. Here's the full list, broken down by decade:

Blog: HTML 5 Test - How Good Is Your Browser?

Great find by zeldman.com, how good is your browser at rendering HTML 5? 'HTML 5 test' puts your browser through its paces and scores on features such as parsing rules, video support, audio and web apps. I've run some tests and Apple's Safari 5.0.1 comes out top with 208 points out of a possible 300. Next up is my browser of choice, Google Chrome with 197 points, followed by Firefox 3.6.8 with a disappointing 139 points. I also tested the site on the iPhone 4's Safari browser, which scored a very respectable 185 points, bettering Firefox by quite a way. Boo to Firefox but don't feel too bad Mozilla fans, Microsoft IE8 on the PC scored a pathetic 27/300 - though IE9 should address these issues.
Forgetting IE8, all browsers tested scored 22/27 for Video, 20 points for Audio and 14 points for Web Apps. So all equal in those respects.

Blog: Sony Announce Official Playstation Move UK Pricing

Microsoft's Xbox 360 Kinect controller has been hogging the news but at £129 and requiring 6ft of space it might not be for everyone. Sony are also trying to ape Nintendo's success with their new Move controller. Official prices have been announced and the Playstation Move will retail at £35, with the required Playstation Eye camera costing £25. There's also an optional sub-controller, much like the Wii's Nunchuck, that will set you back another £25. A cost-saving Move starter kit will be available, including the motion controller, Eye camera and demo disc for a reasonable £50. As motion-controlled games are no fun on your own, you'll no doubt want to double the fun, weighing in at £85 for two Move contrllers and an Eye camera, or £125 if you want to throw the sub-controllers into the mix.
The Playstation Move will be out on 15th September 2010, move on over to the Playstation website for more info

Blog: The New Mac Pro 12 Core Badboy!

Apple have announced their new range of Mac Pros at the top of their range, boasting a whopping 12 cores of processing power. Apple are calling it the "fastest Mac ever" and it's a Mac so it's going to spank anything else on the market with a similar spec.
Cost up your dream computer and you may need to steady yourself but, as a Mac Pro user myself, this is going to be a computer that will last you years before you even have to think about buying another. The Mac Pro is also the easiest computer to upgrade, no need to worry about unplugging something you shouldn't or if it's properly connected, RAM and HDDs just slot right in. It's a beautiful piece of design inside and out.
The new Mac Pro will be available in August, for more info and the full spec visit: apple.com/uk/macpro/

Blog: Official Xbox 360 Kinect Price Announced

Microsoft have finally ended months of speculation and announced their new Xbox 360 Kinect controller will retail at £129.99. The package also includes the game 'Kinect Adventures'. A quick look at the online retailers shows the big guns like Game and Amazon are selling Kinect at the full asking price, while Shopto.net appear to be the cheapest at £124.86. For me it's cost prohibitive; I'm sure the controller is amazing but with games offering a similar functionality to Wii ones I never play, I think even the gadget freak in me will need to pass until the eventual, and inevitable, price drop.
Microsoft have also announced a new version of the Xbox 360 Slim console, to replace the existing Arcade pack. The new console sports all the great new features of the updated console but with 4gb of onboard memory instead of a 250gb. For the savvy gamers out there, if you add your own HDD, at £149.99 rrp this could be the console to go for.

Blog: Katamari For Nottingham

Creator of the Katamari games, Keita Takahashi has been in Nottingham for the past month designing plans for a new play area in Woodthorpe Grange. This is exciting news for Nottingham's families and is the first of its kind in the world. Speaking to the BBC the innovative designer said "I want it to be something no-one has experienced before... I intend to create a design that fits in with the location. I don't want to disturb the trees by cutting them down, so instead, I've included them as part of the fun of the park." He goes on to say "What gives me the most joy is seeing people having fun. [Playgrounds and video games] are both fun things. They actually aren't that different."

Blog: BBC Nottingham's Big Night Out 2010

'Big Night Out' always reminds me of the classic Reeves and Mortimer programme, and I'm always disapointed there's no Man with a Stick, Stott brothers, Wheel of Justice, Novelty Island or Les. What there is however is a beach on Old Market Square, live entertainment, music, free or discounted events, guided and historic walks, ice skating and magic, and you can't shake a big stick at that.
The launch is on 28th July 2010 at Nottingham Riviera. For more info visit the BBC website.

Blog: CSS Vendor Prefixes

As each browser implements new CSS standards, each publisher interprets these differently. In the past (and present for that matter) designers and coders have been using hacks to hide code from one browser, or to appeal to another directly. CSS3 vendor prefixes will render hacks a thing of the past, as coders will be able to target a browser in the line of code. Later, when browser revisions are released, these prefixes will be dropped in favour of the standard, though the prefixes will remain so we won't have to rewrite our existing code.
For more on this head over to Eric Meyer's article on the A List Apart website, for a thorough and extremely interesting disection of the topic.

Blog: Image Creation in CSS and HTML

A really interesting article this. Over at the excellent zeldman.com, Jeffrey Zeldman discusses the use of CSS and HTML to create web graphics without the need for Photoshop or Illustrator. The site links to some quite brilliant examples of graphics created entirely using CSS, check out Louis Harboe's iOS icons and Jeff Batterson's iPhone. Zeldman argues that "no company will ever create “the modern day equivalent of Illustrator and PageMaker for CSS, HTML5 and JavaScript.”" which can only effectively be created by the human hand.
Personally I feel software companies need to adapt to the changes in creating web content, or find that their products are no longer relevant. I'm already reading about a reluctance to upgrade existing software to the latest revisions because of falling confidence in the products available. While some are excellent, others are buggy and contain unusable features put in place it seems only to justify an upgrade. On the other side of the coin, as a designer, I need a visual tool to intuitively transfer my ideas to the screen and feel typing would be at odds to a designers natural way of expression.
It's a great piece and I thoroughly recommend subscribing to Zeldman's feeds. To read the full article visit: zeldman.com

Blog: E3 - Day 2 Summary

Day 2 at E3 featured the gaming big guns Nintendo and Sony.
Sony announced their Move motion controller will be be released in Europe on September 19th, costing $49.99 for the main controller and $29.99 for the additional controller (UK prices have yet to be announced). You'll also need a Playstation Eye camera, which currently retails for £25-35. Other big news from Sony included Grand Tourismo 5 finally getting a 2nd November release date and a big surprise from Valveworks' announcing Steam will connect with the PS3. For a full Sony roundup visit MCV UK's website.
Nintendo's biggest weapon was the launch of the 3DS handheld gaming console. I'm quite excited about this as it houses a 3D screen that works without the need for special glasses. The system, that also includes a motion controller, can even take 3D pictures and I can't wait to see it in action. Other notable mentions include a new Zelda game for Wii, the return of Donkey Kong Country and a Mario Sports game. Jump over to MCV UK for the full roundup.

Blog: Xbox Project Natal Renamed Kinect

The revolutionary Xbox 360 controller, previously known as Project
Natal, has been renamed 'Kinect for Xbox 360' in time for its launch at
this year's E3 gaming event. I personally really liked the name Natal
but it'll be exciting to see what this new gaming controller can offer.

Nottingham City Council is driving plans forward to double the city's district heating system and includes plans for solar panals to go on thousands of roofs. Graham Chapman, Deputy City Council Leader stated "We are already the most energy self sufficient city in the UK and we want to maintain that lead and increase it and compete with European cities."

Forget the phones left in bars and internet predictions, Apple have revealed the iPhone 4 and the iOS 4 operating system (formerly known as iPhone OS). Some of the more notable new features include mulitasking (iOS4 compatible apps only, so don't expect to play Angry Birds while listening to Spotify just yet), a greatly improved screen, improved camera with Flash and front camera for video calling.

Blog: Apple Wireless Keyboard - No Power Tip

When I got into work today I booted up my trusted Mac and found my Apple Wireless keyboard had bitten the dust. Fresh batteries did nothing for it and a replacement seemed the only way to go. After quite a bit of Googling on my iPhone, I read that if you roll up a small pellet of metal sponge or tin foil and drop this in before the batteries it can resucue your keyboard. I said I'd be amazed if that worked. It did work and amazed I was. So if your keyboard has given up the ghost, try this handy tip before investing in a new keyboard.

For a lot of people in the UK, 3D projection mapping was first seen on Sky New's coverage of the 2010 election 'Leader's Debate'. The above video is an advert for Samsung TVs and is projected onto a building in Amsterdam. The effect is quite stunning and I can't wait to see how well the effect works in the flesh.

Blog: BBC iPlayer to Work on iPad

The BBC have announced their iPlayer will be made available at some point on the iPad. This is a great example of how Flash based video can be adapted to output H.264 video that is iPhone and iPad compatible. I have to say I'm very impressed with the BBC iPlayer, it works as excellently on the PS3, Wii and iPhone as it does on the PC or Mac and I'd really like to see the 4oD player be as flexible.

Blog: U2 Pull Out of Glastonbury (Yay)

It's bad news for Ireland's shortest rock star, Bono's badly hurt his back and the U2 tour bus is parked. The good news is they are pulling out of Glastonbury! Admittedly U2 are a hugely popular band, so while not to my taste it's hard to argue they weren't a top headlne act. The big question is who will replace them? The Rolling Stones and Prince have been suggested but there hasn't been a Glastonbury in 20 years where these two acts haven't been rumoured to play. Pearl Jam are in the country but already playing the Hard Rock Calling festival in Hyde Park, so who else could take their place? My AV votes would go to The Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures, Led Zeppelin, Beastie Boys, Radiohead, The Raconteurs, Tenacious D, Beck, The Eels, Kasabian, Gorillaz, Fleetwood Mac or The Monkees (seriously). There's plently there to choose from Mr. Eavis, pick a good one.
UPDATE: Mr. Eavis didn't do too badly this time, he picked the Gorillaz.

Jamie Oliver's restaurant chain Jamie's Italian have submitted a planning application with Nottingham City Council to open a £1m restaurant on Low Pavement. The site is a listed building which currently houses Jass Interiors and Jass Cafe. If successful, it could be open in early 2011. Carluccio's have also obtained planning consent for the Old Slug and Lettuce bar on Low Pavement. A great location, just 5 minutes from the Gooii office - maybe someone will invite us to the launch parties?

Blog: 360 VS PS3 - FIGHT!

Sony and Microsoft would have you believe their console is best. Personally I think they're both great and it really comes down to the games. Both have killer exclusives that makes owning each console worthwhile. Gears of War and Mass Effect are reasons to own a 360 but Uncharted 2 and Little Big Planet make a convincing argument for the PS3. Ever since I can remember there's been the 'war of which is better', Spectrum vs Commodore 64, Amiga or ST, Megadrive vs SNES, Saturn or Playstation, Gamecube vs PS2. The BBC recently put this question to DJ Lazlow, cooly named developer of Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, who leaned towards the 360 "because of Xbox Live" but went on to say it's best if "you can afford to buy both". Interestingly he compares the consoles to the Mac and PC saying "They're two different tools that do different things." I heartily agree, unfortunately it's not cheap to do so.

Blog: Google Chrome OS Web Store

There's some exciting news about Google Chrome OS, the new operating system from the people who brought you the internet (well they might as well have done). Announced last July, Google Chrome OS is for "people who live on the web" and the new Chrome Web Store will feed those hungry people with content. The Web Store promises to give application creators greater flexibility on how they program and deliver content, including being able to use Flash and more control over sales. Chrome OS and the Web Store are destined for Netbooks first, so expect a rival to the iPad any day now.

Blog: Project Natal Pricing

Nearly a year ago at gaming Expo E3 Microsoft announced Project Natal, a motion sensing gaming device that tracks full body movement. Pricing for Natal has been speculated between £50-£150 pounds, essentially covering the price of a game to a new console. Some online retailers are already advertising pre-orders at the top end, which is disappointingly high. This Year's E3 is just around the corner and, with an official release announced in October, the marketing machine will soon be in full flow. The big question is, will it live up to the hype?

"Ninety per cent of the fresh food the hospitals use comes from the East Midlands and it is the only trust to receive a Soil Association award for its work from Prince Charles."

Blog: Robin Hood - Nottingham Film Premiere

Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe's new film 'Robin Hood' had its gala premiere in Nottingham last night. Unfortunately Russ and Riddles couldn't make it, as they were in Cannes for the world premiere. All was not lost as we still had Jack Downham (Noah Tate in Emmerdale!) and Derby's James Burrows who plays the much fought over "feral child" role in the film. And when you add to that Lord Mayor Brian Grocock and real life Sheriff of Nottingham Penny Griggs who needs Cannes? The celebrity guests were rounded off by the brilliant Nottingham born film director Shane Meadows and former WBC Super Middleweight boxing champion Carl Froch.
This is great news for the city as, according to the Metro, the film formerly titled 'Nottingham' is expected to generate "£46million worth of extra tourism to the city". A Vist Nottingham spokeswoman went on to say "Nottingham's getting better and better all the time... There's so much on offer here." Not least of all web design company Gooii, she didn't say it but I bet she was thinking it.

Blog: Is your keyboard a health risk?

Office workers who eat at their desks can attract mice who leave droppings in keyboards as they scavenge for crumbs. The Royal Society of Chemistry warn that mice droppings can be a serious health risk to humans. They also found very high levels of harmful bacteria and warned users face the risk of contracting stomach bugs dubbed "qwerty tummy".
They are encouraging employers to implement a clean workstation policy. The search for Britain's dirtiest keyboard is now underway. They are asking for office workers to send in photographs of their filthy keyboards - the winner will receive £300.
Being a web design business we have a few keyboards in the office, am hoping we won't need to be searching Yell.com any time soon for "vermin control" "Nottingham".

Blog: Orange and T-Mobile Union

The union of Orange and T-Mobile will be called 'Everything Everywhere'. According to the Times Online the new name will be used in advertising to demonstrate the strength of the new network but won't replace the existing brands. Whilst it doesn't strike me as a great name, as with all great branding concepts it all comes down to the marketing. I just hope they use the the Fleetwood Mac song 'Everywhere' in their advertising.

Blog: UK iPad Mobile Pricing

Official annoncements have yet to be made from Vodafone and O2 but price plans for 3G access on the iPad have been revealed in the UK's online Apple store. O2 are offering 500MB of 3G data for £2 a day or £15 for 3GB per month. Vodafone are offering 250MB priced at £10 per month or 5GB for £25 per month. This is compared to Orange who offer 5p for every 1mb used, capped at £40 a month. Alternatively it will cost £2 for 200MB daily or £7.50 a week for 1GB of data. Monthly plans work out at £15 a month for 3gb and £25 a month for 10gb.
I'm sure there's a price plan out there to suit everyone but if you're already paying for a mobile phone contract this could prove pretty pricey. There's also no information on what costs are involved if the agreed limit is exceeded or the tie-in lengths involved.

Blog: The 3D Revolution

3D is the next big thing but I prefered the extra dimension when it was a novelty reserved for horror movies. I liked the gimmicky aspect and to be terrified when items to fly out the screen at me. Since the success of 'Smurfs in Space', sorry 'Avatar', it seems all big budget films have to be in 3D. So many in fact that simply being in 3D is no longer enough to sell a movie. Having said that if they re-release Star Wars in 3D, I'm there. In Nottingham we've had a 3D cinema for quite some time, so the revolution isn't all that new but to many it must be an exciting prospect. Here's a line-up of future 3D releases:
Men In Back 3(D)Harry Potter and The Half Blood PrincePiranha 3DShrek Forever AfterToy Story 3(D)Cats and Dogs (The Revenge of Kitty Galore)The Smurfs 3D (Genuinely)Tron 2Kung Fu Panda 2Cars 2The adventures of Tin TinJourney to the Center of the Earth 220,000 Leagues Under the SeaRicky Gervais FlanimalsTim Burton's FrankenweeniePuss in BootsMadagasgar 3(D)Pixar's NewtMonsters Inc 2As you can see the majority of these films are animated but with the new Spider-Man, Green Lantern, Batman 3 and Superman films rumoured to be 3D, it looks like Hollywood are serious about the format.
Home viewing is also due a 3D makeover, heavily endorsed by Sony who are spearheading the movement with a range of 3D TVs, Blu-Ray players and a 3D update for the PS3 console. Unfortunately not only is the current price point of 3D TVs prohibitive, I personally don't want to wear a clunky pair of glasses just to watch someone humilate themselves on Britain's Got Talent.
